POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT LESSON: TYPE 1 TO TYPE NONE INITIATIVE

Background

ASPIRE delegate Leila Bouchekouk led a Type 1 to Type None Diabetes Initiative this school year to promote awareness of Diabetes to her community. Leila drew inspiration for this initiative from not only her diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes in 2004, but the diagnosis of all her siblings for years to come. While she volunteered at the Stroudsburg Diabetes One Walk since her freshman year in HS, she decided to take on a leadership role and join the heading committee for the event. The event raises tens of thousands of dollars each year towards the cure of the disease. Leila has also been guest speaker to many local groups to educate her community on the disease including the Stroudsburg Rotary Club, ESHSS Girls Soccer, and UN ASPIRE South.

This year to further the cause, Leila Bouchekouk created a Positive Behavior Support Lesson plan to educate the entire 1500 staff and student body at East Stroudsburg HS South. The morning school broadcast presented her education video on March 31, 2016. Alongside the video, a survey was released to classrooms with questions evaluating their knowledge of Diabetes before and after the broadcast. The initiative was the most well received PBS lesson to date. Its ability to maintain a light tone while discussing a serious condition transfixed the student body.
In addition to the PBS Lesson, ASPIRE hosted a dress down day that raised $592 with more than 70% participation in the school that day. From the efforts of these students and more, the Bouchekouk family donated $1,241 at the JDRF Stroudsburg One Walk. The event overall raised more than $73,000 this year!
